Bradford West Yorkshire

The city of Bradford in West Yorkshire is also a district and borough in the North of England, UK. It has a population of just under 500,000 which makes it the 10th largest settlement in England.

Since 1974, the district of Bradford has included the towns of Keighley, Bingley and Ilkley. Since then, the borough has also incorporated Addingham, Baildon, Denholme, Kildwick, Queensbury, Shipley, Silsden and Steeton with Eastburn.

Other places in the borough include Burley-in-Wharfedale, Cottingley, Cullingworth, Gilstead, Haworth, Manningham, Menston, Oakworth, Oxenhope, Saltaire, Thornton and Wilsden.

Bradford is neighbour to Leeds, which is 8.6 miles to the East, and is 13 miles from Wakefield, which is to the South East.

The city gained international importance during the 19th Century, when it was one of the world's most prolific text manufacturers. During the Industrial Revolutions, it was known as "the wool capital of the world".

Textile manufacturing has been in heavy decline since the 1950s, but tourism has emerged as a boost to the local economy, thanks to Bradford's proximity to the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and historical buildings, such as Cartwright Hall, the National Media Museum and the village of Saltaire, which is a World Heritage site. Nearby Haworth is famous for being where the Bronte sisters lived and wrote.
